Advice re Use of Appropriate Marker Buoys/Ropes when Engaged in Pot Fishing for Lobster, Crab or other Fish or Shellfish

Notice to all Shipowners, Fishing Vessel Owners, Agents, Shipmasters, Skippers, Fishers, Yachtsmen, Seafarers and all those engaged in Pot Fishing

NOTE: This Marine Notice supersedes Marine Notice No. 26 of 2016 which is now withdrawn.

The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport reminds all vessel owners, agents, shipmasters, skippers, fishers, yachtsmen, seafarers and those engaged in pot fishing about the risks of vessels’ propellers becoming entangled in ropes of marker buoys used to indicate the position of pots used for fishing lobster, crab, or other fish or shellfish.  This can occur because the length of rope used to fix marker buoys is too long, resulting in the line floating on or just below the surface.

The use of too long a line of rope can result in a situation where even vessels that have taken a wide berth around marker buoys could have their propellers fouled by the rope.

100% of proceeds go to Wounded Veterans – Over $53,000 Already Raised

Over 200 fishermen, disabled military veterans and their families will participate in the 8th annual Halloween Yacht Club Hooks for Heroes Fishing Tournament, sponsored by Patriot Bank N.A. 

The fundraising goal for 2019 is $25,000.00. A total of $53,000 has been raised in the initial seven years of the fundraiser.

“Our Stamford Hooks for Hereos is one of the most successful fishing tournaments for a cause in the nation and is being replicated elsewhere,” said event chair Pat Buzzeo.

President Trump Signs Modern Fish Act - What this means for the nation’s 11 million saltwater anglers

Recreational anglers stand to gain with President Trump’s signing of the Modern Fish Act.

With President Trump’s December 31 signing of the Modernizing Recreational Fisheries Management Act of 2018 (Modern Fish Act), saltwater recreational anglers just got a big leg up when it comes to the federal management of the nation’s fish stocks.

“The Modern Fish Act is a big step forward in recognizing the value of today’s recreational fishing,” said Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) Manager of Government Affairs David Kennedy. “It will help improve public access to America's federal waters and management of fish stock, promote conservation of natural marine resources, and spur economic growth by fixing key issues in the law governing marine fisheries.”

The act authorizes the use of management tools more appropriate for recreational fishing, and seeks out better and more accurate recreational harvest data. It will also study mixed-use fishery allocation and look at the impact and provide recommendations on catch share management programs.
